Tsunami Warning Issued After Massive Earthquake Hits Papua New Guinea

Countries which are across the Pacific Ocean have been issued with tsunami warnings following a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake which struck Papua New Guinea early Monday morning.

Officials have issued out warnings to several nations about tsunami waves which have been brought about the earthquake as well as the impact that they might cause, the Washington Post reported.
Initial reports indicate that the earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea happened at a depth of 65 kilometers that is approximately 40 miles. According to CNN, the epicenter of the earthquake is southeast of Kokopo town which is located in Papua New Guinea’s northeastern side.

The warning that has been issued is by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. In a press release which passed out the warning, The Tsunami Warning Center stated that the earthquake in itself was very strong and that it can generate hazardous tsunami which could end up reaching coastlines as far as 1,000 kilometers of the Kokopo town. In addition to that they also reported that the waves that have been generated by the earthquake might reach 10 feet in height.
In the meantime, officials in Papua New Guinea are currently looking at the amount of damage that had been caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake. As at now there has been no reports with regards to any injuries or damages that have resulted from the quake, the officials said.

Martin Mose, Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Center acting director, there has been no tsunami waves which have been witnessed as a result of the quake an hour after it had stuck.
