The United States is going through serious water crisis. The California droughts reveal about the horrors of the climate change to the country. The river pollution and low ground water levels are not only the problems of the developing world anymore. The largest reservoir in the states is under threat now as water levels reached all time low. Colorado River’s flow is also lowest in the history due to lack of rains.
Hoover Dam’s Lake Mead located in Nevada is the symbol of national pride. It was commissioned by the president Herbert Hoover to create massive public employment after great economic depression. The 79 year old structure now reflects severity of water problem in the country. The height of the dam is around 327 meters above mean sea level.
Data predicts that in the next January, the water level will be below 1,075 feet. This means Arizona and Nevada are going to face massive water cuts. These are very important states in the western United States. The water cuts would be officially announced in August. The government officials are saying they are not sure about the water cuts yet. Bureau of Reclamation assured that these are just projections.
Rose Davis from the bureau further added that there is very less probability of water shortage next year. By the end of December the reservoir’s normal levels would be restored but levels are expected to go down for next eight weeks. Nevada, Arizona, Northern Mexico and Southern California’s 40 million people are dependent on Lake Mead’s water. The lake also keeps agricultural fields green.
