The nation of Germany is known for its highest production of energy through renewable sources. The country uses Nuclear, wind and solar energy on a large scale. The latest coal scam may tarnish its image of being green nation. The clean energy drive by the Germany is aimed at leading the world by the example to use more renewable energy. But picture doesn’t look so good; the coal scam challenges the ability of the nation to fulfill domestic demands. There is lack of balance between economic needs and environmental concerns. The Angel Merkel is known to be the Climate Chancellor due to her aggressive green policies.
The activists hope that she is the only leader who can ask the Group of Seven industrial nations to implement tough policies to achieve new green house gases target. The G-7 summit is scheduled in Bavaria on June 7-8 and many ground breaking decisions for the upcoming Paris Summit of the United Nations will be taken on the occasion. The Germany is Europe’s largest economy and there for largest CO2 emitter. The policy designed by the chancellor is known as 'Energiewende'. The legislation supports clean energy and discourages the use of nuclear reactors and fossil fuel.
But on the implementation side, the German government has failed. It couldn’t even impose penalties on old and highly emitting coal plants. The target of reducing emissions by 2020 is clearly in danger. Ahead of this important summit, the Germany may lose its green tag. The Greenpeace executive Director, Kumi Naidoo informed that Germany should admit that it has failed to live up to its green commitments. The country continues to emit CO2 on large-scale.
