Ants thrive on human food in NYC

Many animals have become used to of the human food, but this time researchers have found that ants are thriving due to human food in the Manhattan region of the New York. The diet of the ant was studied and many isotopes in the human diet were found in a study conducted at the New York City.

Many ant species prefer habitats away from the human settlements; the research will help us to understand the reason behind some ant species living in building, sidewalks or walls in human settlements. The credit for cleaning up the trash created by human being can also be given to these tiny creatures after the study.

More than 100 ant samples from 21 types of ants were collected from around 12 different locations which consist of streets, parks and sidewalks in the New York City. The isotope content of the ant body was detected from the samples. The carbon-13 is found in animal food like grass, sugar cane and corn. This isotope of the carbon is present in all animals including humans.

The ants had high amount of carbon-13 which is present all human food and bodies. The highest carbon-13 content was present in ant living on the pavements, sidewalks and medians. The closer ants stayed near human, the more carbon-13 content they had. The research finally concluded that urban ants consume large amount of human food as a part of their diet. The rare species called Lasius cf. emarginatus can be only discovered in the Manhattan’s medians along with sidewalks. But study showed no sign of preference for the human food by ants in a research published in the Royal Society B.
